Mother-tongue education

Mother-tongue education teaches learners through their first or home language, especially in early schooling. It can support learning while also shaping language maintenance and access to education.

Language of instruction: The language used to teach school subjects and communicate classroom knowledge. It is the central policy choice determining whether teaching occurs in learners’ home languages.
Bilingual education: Education that uses two languages as media of instruction or develops proficiency in both. Mother-tongue education often operates within a broader program intended to develop more than one language.

Language policy: Rules and practices that determine how languages are used and supported in public life and institutions. Government policy determines which languages receive classroom materials, teacher training, and official support.
