Mouthpiece

A mouthpiece is the part of a wind instrument through which a player directs breath. In brass instruments, it also provides a surface against which the player vibrates the lips.

Embouchure: The coordinated use of facial muscles and lips to control sound on a wind instrument. It controls the airflow and lip vibration that meet at the mouthpiece.
Brass instrument: A wind instrument that produces sound through vibrating lips coupled to a resonating air column. Brass mouthpieces serve as the lip-vibration interface for this instrument family.
Trumpet mouthpiece: A cup-shaped brass mouthpiece designed for playing the trumpet. Its cup and rim shape the trumpet player's lip vibration and response.
Free-reed instrument: A wind instrument whose reed vibrates freely within an opening rather than against a mouthpiece. Its reed can sound without the mouthpiece contact used by common woodwind reeds.
Lip vibration: Periodic motion of the lips that produces sound in brass instruments. The mouthpiece supports this vibration while directing its sound into the instrument.
Woodwind instrument: A wind instrument whose sound is produced by an edge tone, reed, or other airflow mechanism. Woodwind mouthpieces channel breath toward the instrument's sound-producing mechanism.
Trombone mouthpiece: A brass mouthpiece designed for the trombone, typically with a relatively large cup. Its dimensions accommodate the trombone's register and playing demands.
Double reed: A pair of joined reed blades that vibrate against each other to produce sound. It forms its own vibrating mouthpiece, unlike a single reed mounted on one.
Acoustic impedance: A measure of how strongly a system resists oscillatory flow, including sound waves. The mouthpiece's impedance affects how easily the player's lips sustain vibration.
Reed (music): A thin strip of material that vibrates against a mouthpiece or another reed to produce sound. Single- and double-reed mouthpieces support the vibrating reed rather than vibrating lips.
