Mu'awiya I

Mu'awiya I was the first Umayyad caliph, ruling from 661 to 680. He established hereditary succession and made Damascus the center of caliphal government.

First Fitna: The first major civil war in the early Islamic community, fought from 656 to 661. Mu'awiya’s bid for power grew from the conflict over succession after Caliph Uthman’s murder.
Umayyad Caliphate: The caliphate ruled by the Umayyad dynasty from 661 to 750, with its capital at Damascus. Mu'awiya founded the dynasty and established the institutions that sustained its rule.
Karbala: The 680 battle in which Husayn ibn Ali and his small group were killed by Umayyad forces. It followed Yazid’s accession and became a defining event in opposition to Mu'awiya’s succession policy.
Amr ibn al-As: An Arab commander and politician who conquered Egypt and later supported Mu'awiya. His alliance gave Mu'awiya military and political influence in Egypt during the First Fitna.
Uthman: The third caliph, whose assassination in 656 helped trigger the First Fitna. Mu'awiya, Uthman’s Syrian governor and kinsman, demanded justice for his killing.
Yazid I: The second Umayyad caliph, who succeeded his father Mu'awiya in 680. Mu'awiya’s nomination of his son made succession hereditary in practice.
Husayn ibn Ali: The grandson of Muhammad who opposed the rule of Yazid I and was killed at Karbala. His refusal to recognize Yazid exposed the enduring challenge created by hereditary succession.
Marwan I: An Umayyad caliph whose rule began in 684 amid the Second Fitna. As a kinsman and administrator under Mu'awiya, Marwan helped preserve Umayyad power after the succession crisis.
Ali: The fourth caliph and cousin and son-in-law of Muhammad, whose rule was challenged by Mu'awiya. Their rivalry over Uthman’s death and legitimate authority drove the civil war.
Shura: Consultation among community leaders, invoked in early Islamic discussions of political leadership. Mu'awiya’s designation of Yazid departed from expectations of selection through consultation.
