Mukden Incident

A 1931 explosion on a Japanese-owned railway near Mukden, staged by officers of Japan’s Kwantung Army and used to justify Japan’s occupation of Manchuria.

Kwantung Army: A Japanese military force stationed in Manchuria that operated with substantial independence from civilian authorities. Its officers planned the explosion and used it to launch military action.
