Murad III

Murad III was Ottoman sultan from 1574 to 1595. His reign included a long war with Safavid Persia and Ottoman expansion in North Africa.

Ottoman–Safavid War (1578–1590): A war between the Ottoman and Safavid empires that ended with the 1590 Treaty of Constantinople. The conflict with Safavid Persia defined much of Murad III’s eastern policy.
Selim II: Ottoman sultan from 1566 to 1574 and Murad III’s father. Selim’s death brought Murad to the throne in 1574.
Ottoman expansion in Morocco: The extension of Ottoman influence into Morocco through diplomacy and military intervention in the sixteenth century. Murad’s government supported intervention that strengthened Ottoman influence around Fez.

Battle of Çıldır: A 1578 Ottoman victory over Safavid forces in the Caucasus during the Ottoman–Safavid War. It opened the Ottoman campaign that brought much of the Caucasus under Ottoman control.
Ottoman succession: The changing practices by which members of the Ottoman dynasty inherited or seized the sultanate. Murad’s accession took place within a dynastic system without a fixed eldest-son rule.
Ottoman–Habsburg frontier: The shifting military and political border between the Ottoman and Habsburg empires in central Europe. Murad’s reign included an uneasy peace on this frontier while resources went east.
Lala Mustafa Pasha: An Ottoman statesman and commander who led the eastern campaign against the Safavids in 1578. He launched the campaign that began Murad’s major war with Safavid Persia.
Treaty of Constantinople (1590): The treaty that ended the Ottoman–Safavid War of 1578–1590 and granted the Ottomans extensive territory. Its terms marked the territorial high point of Murad’s war with the Safavids.
Manisa: A city in western Anatolia that served as a residence for Ottoman princes preparing for rule. Murad governed as prince in Manisa before succeeding his father.
