Nanda Empire

An ancient Indian empire ruled by the Nanda dynasty from Magadha in the fourth century BCE, before the Maurya Empire. It became known for its wealth and large army.

Magadha: An ancient kingdom in eastern India that became a major center of power in the Ganges basin. Magadha was the Nandas’ territorial base and the center from which their empire expanded.
Nanda dynasty: The dynasty that ruled Magadha and its expanding territories before the Mauryas. Its rulers and succession made up the political core of the empire.
Chandragupta Maurya: The founder of the Maurya Empire, who overthrew the Nanda dynasty and ruled much of the Indian subcontinent. His conquest ended Nanda rule and established the empire that succeeded it.
Greek accounts of India: Descriptions of the Indian subcontinent written by Greek authors after Alexander’s campaigns. They preserve reports of a wealthy eastern kingdom and a large army near the Nanda period.
Haryanka dynasty: An early ruling dynasty of Magadha, associated with Bimbisara and Ajatashatru. Its earlier rule formed part of the succession of Magadhan dynasties preceding the Nandas.
Nanda army: The military forces attributed to the Nanda rulers in ancient and later accounts. Reports of its size help explain the Nandas’ reputation for formidable military power.
Chanakya: An Indian political thinker traditionally identified as Chandragupta Maurya’s adviser and strategist. Later narratives cast him as a key architect of the Nandas’ overthrow.
Mahavamsa: A Pali chronicle of Sri Lankan history that includes accounts of early Indian dynasties and Buddhism. Its dynastic narrative is one source for the transition from Nanda to Mauryan rule.
Shishunaga dynasty: A dynasty that ruled Magadha before the Nandas, traditionally placed between the Haryankas and Nandas. It is the dynasty most often identified as the Nandas’ immediate predecessor in Magadha.
Ancient Indian taxation: Systems for collecting revenue in ancient Indian states, including taxes on land, trade, and production. Later accounts link Nanda wealth with heavy revenue collection.
