Napoleon III

Napoleon III was president of the French Republic from 1848 to 1852 and emperor of the French from 1852 to 1870. His rule combined authoritarian government with economic modernization, urban reconstruction, and ambitious foreign policy.

French Second Republic: The French republic established after the February Revolution of 1848, lasting until Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte's 1851 coup. Its constitution made him president and limited him to one term, setting the stage for his coup.
Napoleon Bonaparte: French military commander who became emperor and ruled much of Europe in the early nineteenth century. Napoleon III built his political identity on the name and legacy of his famous uncle.

Hortense de Beauharnais: Queen of Holland from 1806 to 1810 and mother of Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, later Napoleon III. Her influence and protection helped shape his childhood and education in exile.
Georges-Eugène Haussmann: French official who oversaw the extensive reconstruction of Paris under Napoleon III. He carried out the emperor's urban program as prefect of the Seine.
French intervention in Mexico: France's 1862–1867 military intervention in Mexico, which installed Maximilian as emperor before French withdrawal. The costly expedition became a major failure of Napoleon III's foreign policy.
French Revolution of 1848: The revolution that overthrew the July Monarchy and established the French Second Republic. Its republican upheaval created the election through which Louis-Napoléon first gained national office.
