NASA Astronaut Group 5

NASA Astronaut Group 5 was the 1966 astronaut class selected as the agency prepared for Apollo lunar missions. Its 19 members included scientists and test pilots.

Roger B. Chaffee: Roger B. Chaffee was a NASA astronaut who died with two crewmates in the Apollo 1 cabin fire. The class's only member who died before flying in space, he was assigned to Apollo 1.
NASA Astronaut Group 1: NASA's first astronaut class, selected in 1959 for Project Mercury. Its military test-pilot model established the original template that later classes broadened.
Apollo program: NASA's human spaceflight program that landed astronauts on the Moon between 1969 and 1972. The class was chosen chiefly to provide crews for Apollo lunar missions.
Apollo 1 fire: The 1967 cabin fire during an Apollo spacecraft test that killed astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. Chaffee's death forced changes to the program in which his class was selected to serve.
Harrison Schmitt: Harrison Schmitt is a geologist and former NASA astronaut who walked on the Moon during Apollo 17. He became the class's sole lunar geologist and the last person to walk on the Moon.
NASA Astronaut Group 2: NASA's 1962 astronaut class, selected as the agency prepared for Gemini and Apollo. It preceded the class in NASA's growing sequence of astronaut selections.
Apollo 1: The planned first crewed Apollo mission, whose astronauts died in a spacecraft fire during a 1967 test. Group 5 member Roger Chaffee was assigned to its crew.
NASA scientist-astronauts: Astronauts selected by NASA for scientific training as well as spacecraft operations. The class included scientists alongside test pilots, extending the range of expertise in the corps.
John Young: John Young was a NASA astronaut who flew six space missions, including two lunar missions. He led the class's first mission to space and later commanded Apollo 16.
NASA Astronaut Group 3: NASA's 1963 astronaut class, selected during preparations for Gemini and Apollo. Its selection continued NASA's expansion of the astronaut corps before the 1966 class.
