Naturalism (theatre)

Naturalism in theatre stages ordinary life through detailed settings, everyday speech, and behavior shaped by heredity and environment. It treats dramatic action as subject to observable social and psychological conditions.

Émile Zola: A French novelist and critic who argued that literature should apply methods of observation associated with science. His 1881 essay on naturalism in theatre set out the movement’s aims.
Realism (theatre): A theatrical movement that represents recognizable people and social life rather than idealized or fantastic subjects. Realism is the broader theatrical movement from which naturalism developed as a more programmatic approach.
Determinism: The view that events, including human actions, arise from prior conditions rather than uncaused choice. Naturalist characters are often portrayed as constrained by forces beyond conscious control.
Miss Julie: An 1888 play by August Strindberg about a count’s daughter and her father’s valet on a midsummer night. Its class conflict and psychologically pressured action exemplify naturalist drama.
Romanticism: An artistic and intellectual movement that emphasized emotion, imagination, individuality, and the sublime. Its idealized heroes and heightened expression differ from naturalism’s ordinary lives and material constraints.
Fourth wall: An imaginary boundary between performers and audience that makes a stage room seem enclosed. Treating the stage as a room to be observed supports naturalistic illusion.
Théâtre Libre: An independent Paris theatre founded by André Antoine in 1887 to stage new plays outside official censorship. Antoine’s productions made naturalist staging a practical theatrical program.
Positivism: A philosophical approach that treats observation and empirical evidence as the basis of reliable knowledge. Naturalism borrowed the ambition to observe human life systematically.
Ghosts (play): An 1881 play by Henrik Ibsen about a widow, her son, and the legacy of a concealed family history. Its treatment of heredity and social hypocrisy became a touchstone for naturalist theatre.
Symbolism (arts): An artistic movement that used images and suggestion to evoke spiritual or subjective meanings beyond literal representation. Symbolist theatre resisted naturalism’s demand for observable settings and behavior.
