Knowra Neurological disorder Neurological disorder A disease or condition that disrupts the structure or function of the brain, spinal cord, or peripheral nerves. Its effects can involve movement, sensation, cognition, communication, or autonomic control.
Central nervous system : The brain and spinal cord, which integrate information and coordinate bodily activity. Disorders affecting either structure are classified as central nervous system disorders.
Ischemic stroke : A stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel that reduces blood flow to part of the brain. It produces sudden neurological deficits through oxygen deprivation and brain-tissue injury.
Neurological examination : A clinical assessment of nervous system function, including mental status, cranial nerves, movement, sensation, reflexes, and coordination. Its findings help localize dysfunction and guide further testing.
Psychiatric disorder : A condition involving clinically significant disturbances in thought, emotion, or behavior. Psychiatric and neurological disorders can overlap, but differ in diagnostic frameworks and typical treatment approaches.
Peripheral nervous system : The nerves and ganglia outside the brain and spinal cord that connect them to the body. Damage here can impair sensation, movement, or autonomic function beyond the central nervous system.
Epilepsy : A brain disorder characterized by an enduring tendency to have unprovoked seizures. Abnormally synchronized neural activity causes its recurrent seizures.
Neuroimaging : Techniques that produce images of the brain or nervous system, including MRI and CT. Imaging can reveal structural causes such as bleeding, tumors, or tissue injury.
Neurodevelopmental disorder : A group of conditions that begin during development and affect brain function, learning, behavior, or communication. It is a major class of neurological conditions with onset during development.
Neuron : An electrically excitable cell that receives and transmits signals through the nervous system. Neuronal injury or dysfunction underlies many neurological symptoms.
Multiple sclerosis : An immune-mediated disease in which damage to central nervous system myelin disrupts neural signaling. Demyelination slows or blocks signals along affected nerve fibers.
