New Culture Movement

An intellectual and cultural movement in China, especially active from 1915 into the 1920s, that promoted science, democracy, vernacular literature, and critiques of Confucian tradition.

Chen Duxiu: A Chinese revolutionary and intellectual who co-founded the journal New Youth and helped launch the New Culture Movement. His editorship made New Youth the movement’s principal platform.
New Youth: A Chinese intellectual journal founded in 1915 that published influential calls for cultural and political reform. Its essays gave the movement a recurring venue and a broad audience.
Xinhai Revolution: The 1911 revolution that ended the Qing dynasty and established the Republic of China. The republic’s instability left intellectuals questioning whether political change alone could renew China.

Republic of China: A state founded in 1912 after the fall of the Qing dynasty, initially governing mainland China. The movement developed amid the new republic’s political fragmentation and contested legitimacy.
Chinese Communist Party: A political party founded in China in 1921 that became the country’s ruling party in 1949. Movement-era debates and networks helped create an opening for Marxist organizing.
Hundred Days' Reform: A short-lived 1898 reform program in the Qing dynasty that sought sweeping institutional and educational changes. Its top-down political approach contrasts with the later movement’s emphasis on public debate and cultural change.
