New Netherland

New Netherland was a Dutch colonial province in North America, established in 1624 and surrendered to England in 1664. Its settlements centered on the Hudson River and included New Amsterdam.

Dutch West India Company: A Dutch chartered company founded in 1621 to conduct trade and wage war in the Atlantic world. It founded and governed New Netherland as a commercial colony.
Patroon system: A Dutch landholding system that granted large estates to patrons who settled a specified number of colonists. The West India Company used it to encourage settlement along the colony’s rivers.
Peter Minuit: A Walloon-born director-general of New Netherland who governed from 1626 to 1631. He oversaw the colony’s early consolidation and the founding of New Amsterdam.
Second Anglo-Dutch War: A war between England and the Dutch Republic from 1665 to 1667, fought across Europe and overseas. The conflict helped formalize the English possession of former New Netherland.

New Amsterdam: The principal Dutch settlement and administrative center of New Netherland, located at the southern tip of Manhattan. It served as the colony’s capital and main harbor.
