Nicotinic acetylcholine receptor

A ligand-gated ion channel activated by acetylcholine and nicotine. Its opening allows cations to cross cell membranes, producing rapid electrical and cellular responses.

Ligand-gated ion channel: A membrane protein channel that opens or closes when a chemical ligand binds. Nicotinic receptors are members of this channel family, distinguished by their acetylcholine binding.
Chemical synapse: A junction where one cell communicates with another by releasing chemical messengers. Nicotinic receptors convert acetylcholine released at synapses into postsynaptic responses.
Neuromuscular junction: The synapse between a motor neuron and a skeletal muscle fiber. Muscle-type nicotinic receptors at this junction initiate muscle-fiber depolarization.

Acetylcholine: A neurotransmitter that carries signals at neuromuscular junctions, autonomic synapses, and within the brain. Binding acetylcholine opens the receptor’s channel and initiates its response.
Membrane potential: The voltage difference between the inside and outside of a cell membrane. Cation flow through the receptor changes membrane voltage.
Autonomic ganglion: A cluster of autonomic neuron cell bodies where preganglionic neurons synapse with postganglionic neurons. Neuronal nicotinic receptors transmit signals across autonomic ganglionic synapses.
Ionotropic receptor: A receptor that directly controls an ion channel when a ligand binds. Nicotinic receptors are ionotropic, unlike metabotropic acetylcholine receptors.
Ricardo Miledi: A Mexican-British neurobiologist known for research on synaptic transmission and acetylcholine receptors. His experiments helped characterize acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction.
