Nikolai Vatutin

Nikolai Vatutin was a Soviet general who commanded the Voronezh Front during the Battle of Kursk and later led the 1st Ukrainian Front.

Battle of Kursk: A major 1943 Eastern Front battle in which Soviet forces halted and defeated a German offensive. Vatutin commanded the Voronezh Front, which absorbed the southern German attack and counterattacked.
Voronezh Front: A Soviet wartime front, a large military formation, that fought on the southern sector of the Eastern Front. Vatutin commanded this formation during the Battle of Kursk.
Russian Civil War: A conflict from 1917 to 1922 among rival political and military forces after the Russian Revolution. Vatutin entered military service during the upheaval that followed the revolution.
Georgy Zhukov: A Soviet marshal who commanded major forces in key victories over Nazi Germany. Zhukov helped coordinate Soviet preparations for Kursk, where Vatutin commanded a front.
