Northern Crusades

The Northern Crusades were Christian military campaigns from the 12th to 16th centuries that conquered and converted pagan peoples around the Baltic Sea.

Livonian Brothers of the Sword: A German military order founded in 1202 to conquer and convert Livonia. This order led early crusading campaigns in Livonia before merging with the Teutonic Order.
Wendish Crusade: A 1147 crusade against pagan Slavic peoples along the southern Baltic coast. It was an early Baltic campaign, launched alongside the Second Crusade.
Albert of Riga: The third bishop of Riga, who led German expansion in Livonia in the early 13th century. He founded the Livonian Brothers of the Sword and made Riga a base for conquest.
Crusade: A medieval Christian holy war authorized by the papacy and associated with spiritual privileges for participants. The Baltic campaigns adopted crusading vows, indulgences, and papal authorization.
Prussian language: An extinct Baltic language once spoken by the Old Prussians in the southeastern Baltic region. Conquest and assimilation contributed to the eventual disappearance of the language.
Teutonic Order: A Catholic military order that established a powerful state on the southeastern Baltic coast. Its conquests and rule formed the largest and most durable political outcome of the crusades.
Livonian Crusade: The 12th- and 13th-century conquest and conversion of Livonia by German crusaders. It extended crusading warfare into the eastern Baltic and established German ecclesiastical rule.
Waldemar II of Denmark: King of Denmark from 1202 to 1241, known for expanding Danish power in the Baltic region. His campaigns helped establish Danish rule in Estonia during the crusading era.
Christianization of Europe: The gradual spread and establishment of Christianity across Europe from antiquity through the Middle Ages. The Northern Crusades continued Europe’s earlier, uneven expansion of Christian rule.
Old Prussians: A Baltic-speaking people who lived in the region later called Prussia before German conquest. Their subjugation and conversion were central outcomes of the Prussian campaigns.
