Northern Expedition

The Northern Expedition was a military campaign launched by the Kuomintang in 1926 to defeat regional warlords and unify China under its government.

National Revolutionary Army: The Kuomintang’s armed force, organized with Soviet assistance and led during the expedition by Chiang Kai-shek. Its divisions advanced north from Guangdong against the warlord armies.
Xinhai Revolution: The 1911 revolution that overthrew the Qing dynasty and established the Republic of China. Its unresolved political settlement left China vulnerable to competing military regimes.
Chiang Kai-shek: A Kuomintang military and political leader who headed the Nationalist government in China and later Taiwan. He commanded the expedition’s eastern forces and led the 1927 purge of communists.
Nanjing decade: The period of Kuomintang rule centered in Nanjing from 1927 to 1937. The expedition established the Nationalist government that governed during this decade.
Whampoa Military Academy: A military academy founded near Guangzhou in 1924 to train officers for the Kuomintang. Its graduates supplied many commanders and political officers to the expedition.
Warlord Era: A period of fragmented rule in China, especially from 1916 to 1928, when regional military leaders controlled competing territories. The expedition was designed to end this division through Kuomintang-led unification.
Wang Jingwei: A Kuomintang politician who led the left-wing Wuhan government in 1927 and later collaborated with Japan. His government contested Chiang’s authority during the expedition’s internal split.
Nanjing Nationalist government: The Republic of China government led by the Kuomintang from Nanjing after 1927. It emerged from the expedition’s victory and claimed authority over a newly unified country.
First United Front: An alliance between the Kuomintang and Chinese Communist Party, formed in 1924 to oppose warlords and imperialism. The alliance enabled communists to work within the National Revolutionary Army before it fractured.
May Fourth Movement: A student-led protest movement that began in Beijing in 1919 against imperialism and China’s political weakness. Its nationalism and new political activism helped broaden support for revolutionary parties.
