Nubia

Nubia is a Nile region spanning present-day southern Egypt and northern Sudan. It was home to ancient states including Kerma and Kush and linked sub-Saharan Africa with Egypt and the Mediterranean.

Kerma culture: A Bronze Age culture centered on the city of Kerma in present-day Sudan, known for its distinctive pottery and monumental architecture. Kerma was Nubia’s earliest major kingdom, flourishing south of Egypt before Kush.
Nile cataracts: Six rocky stretches of the Nile that interrupt navigation between Khartoum and Aswan. Cataracts shaped travel, borders, and the location of Nubian centers.
Jebel Barkal: A sacred mountain near ancient Napata in Sudan, associated with the Kushite kings and the god Amun. Its temples and royal monuments reveal Napata’s religious and political importance.
Lake Nasser: A large reservoir in southern Egypt and northern Sudan formed by the Aswan High Dam. Its creation submerged settlements and archaeological sites in Egyptian Nubia.
Kingdom of Kush: An ancient kingdom in Nubia that at times ruled territory from the Nile’s middle reaches into Egypt. Kush succeeded Kerma and became the region’s best-known ancient power.
Nile Valley: The inhabited corridor along the Nile River and its tributaries, extending through northeastern Africa. Nubia forms the middle Nile corridor between Egypt and the Sudanese interior.
Pyramids of Meroë: The steep-sided royal pyramids in the cemetery fields of the Kushite city of Meroë. Their distinctive form marks the burial traditions of Meroë’s rulers.
Aswan High Dam: A large dam on the Nile in southern Egypt, completed in 1970 to control floods and generate electricity. Its reservoir prompted the international campaign to rescue threatened Nubian monuments.
Napata: An ancient city and religious center of Kush near the fourth cataract of the Nile. Napata anchored Kushite rule and the cult of Amun in northern Sudan.
Nile trade: The movement of goods and people along the Nile and between its riverine communities. River transport carried Nubian gold, livestock, and other goods to Egypt and beyond.
