Nylon

Nylon is a family of synthetic polyamides whose chains contain repeating amide linkages. Its strength, durability, and ability to be formed into fibers make it useful in textiles, ropes, and molded products.

Polyamide: A polymer whose repeating units are joined by amide linkages. Nylon belongs to this broader chemical family.
Condensation polymerization: A polymerization process in which monomers join while releasing small molecules such as water. Nylon 6,6 is produced by linking its monomers through this process.
Wallace Hume Carothers: An American chemist whose research at DuPont helped establish the science of synthetic polymers. He led the research team that developed nylon.
Nylon rope: Rope made from nylon fibers, valued for strength, elasticity, and abrasion resistance. Nylon’s toughness and stretch make it useful in load-bearing ropes.
Microplastics: Plastic particles smaller than five millimeters, produced during manufacture or through material breakdown. Wear and washing can release tiny nylon fibers into water systems.
Polymer: A large molecule made of repeating structural units called monomers. Nylon’s long molecular chains give it fiber-forming properties.
Ring-opening polymerization: A polymerization process that opens cyclic monomers and joins them into chains. Nylon 6 is commonly made by opening caprolactam rings.
DuPont: An American chemical company founded in 1802 that became a major producer of synthetic materials. DuPont’s research laboratories developed and commercialized nylon.
Nylon fishing line: Fishing line made from nylon monofilament, commonly used for its flexibility and resilience. Nylon can be drawn into smooth, flexible monofilaments.
Textile recycling: The recovery and processing of discarded textiles into reusable fibers or materials. Blended fabrics and dyes complicate the recovery of nylon from clothing.
