Observable

An observable is a measurable physical quantity in quantum theory, represented by a self-adjoint operator. Its possible measurement outcomes are the operator’s eigenvalues.

Self-adjoint operator: A linear operator equal to its adjoint, with real spectrum under the conditions used in quantum mechanics. Self-adjointness ensures an observable’s measurement values are real.
Hilbert space: A complete inner-product vector space used to represent quantum states and operators. Observables act on the Hilbert space that contains the system’s states.
Quantum measurement: A physical interaction that produces an outcome associated with a quantum system and changes its state. An observable supplies the mathematical model for the outcomes of an ideal measurement.
Positive-operator-valued measure: A collection of positive operators summing to the identity that represents a generalized quantum measurement. Unlike a single sharp observable’s projection-valued measure, it describes unsharp or generalized outcomes.
Born rule: The rule that assigns probabilities to quantum measurement outcomes from a system’s state. It converts an observable’s spectral structure and the state into outcome probabilities.
Linear operator: A map between vector spaces that preserves vector addition and scalar multiplication. Quantum observables are a physically constrained class of linear operators.
Spin measurement: A measurement of a particle’s intrinsic angular momentum component along a specified axis. Spin components are observables with discrete outcomes, such as two values for spin one-half.
Unsharp observable: A quantum observable whose outcomes are represented by a positive-operator-valued measure rather than orthogonal projections. It extends the sharp-operator model when measurements have intrinsic imprecision or limited resolution.
Quantum state: A mathematical description of a quantum system’s physical state, represented by a vector or density operator. The state determines the probability distribution for measuring this observable.
Eigenvalue: A scalar by which an eigenvector is multiplied when a linear operator acts on it. Eigenvalues supply the possible outcomes in measurements of discrete-spectrum observables.
