Observation

Observation is the deliberate recording of phenomena or measurements as evidence. It can involve direct perception or instruments and follows methods chosen to make records interpretable and reliable.

Measurement: The assignment of numbers or categories to properties according to defined rules. Measurement turns observed properties into values that can be compared and analyzed.
Evidence: Information used to support or challenge a claim. Observation supplies records that may count as evidence for a claim.
Participant Observation: A qualitative research method in which investigators take part in the social setting they study. It combines participation with systematic recording of social life.
Experiment: A study that deliberately manipulates conditions to test their effects. Unlike passive observation, an experiment changes conditions to investigate causal effects.
Operationalization: The process of defining how an abstract concept will be identified or measured in practice. It specifies which observable signs count as evidence for an abstract idea.
Perception: The organization and interpretation of sensory information by an organism. Direct observation depends partly on perceptual systems and their limits.
Naturalistic Observation: The study of behavior in its ordinary setting without experimental manipulation. It records behavior under everyday conditions rather than controlled intervention.
Introspection: The examination of one’s own thoughts, feelings, or conscious experiences. It concerns inward examination, while observation often records publicly accessible phenomena.
Instrument Calibration: The comparison of an instrument’s readings with reference standards to identify or correct measurement error. Calibration helps ensure instrument-based observations correspond to known quantities.
Inference: A conclusion drawn from premises, evidence, or observed information. Observations are records; conclusions drawn from them require inference.
