Odessa

Odessa is a port city on Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. Founded in the late eighteenth century, it developed as a major trading center with a diverse population and distinctive urban culture.

Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca: A 1774 treaty that expanded Russian influence around the Black Sea and secured access to its northern coast. Its aftermath helped create the political conditions for Russia’s expansion toward the site of Odessa.

Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater: A nineteenth-century opera house in Odessa, designed in a baroque revival style. Its architecture reflects the wealth and European cultural aspirations of the growing port city.
Novorossiya: A historical name for territories in the northern Black Sea region incorporated into the Russian Empire. Imperial accounts placed Odessa within this region, a label later revived in political disputes.
