Office of Strategic Services

The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was a United States wartime intelligence agency established in 1942 to gather intelligence and conduct espionage and special operations during World War II.

Special Operations Executive: A British wartime organization that conducted sabotage and supported resistance movements in occupied Europe. Its methods and experience influenced the OSS’s organization of sabotage and resistance operations.
William J. Donovan: A United States military officer and lawyer who led the OSS during World War II. Donovan championed a centralized intelligence organization and directed the agency throughout its existence.
Virginia Hall: An American intelligence officer who organized resistance networks in occupied France for the OSS and its predecessors. Her field work exemplifies the agency’s reliance on clandestine networks and local allies.
