Ögedei Khan

Ögedei Khan was the second Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, ruling from 1229 until his death in 1241. His reign extended Mongol power across much of Eurasia and established institutions for imperial governance.

Mongol invasion of Europe: The Mongol campaigns into Eastern Europe and Central Europe, culminating in major invasions in 1241. Ögedei’s reign authorized the western campaign that reached Poland and Hungary before news of his death prompted withdrawal.
Yam (Mongol postal system): The Mongol relay system of stations, horses, and provisions for official travel and communication. Ögedei expanded the yam to move orders, envoys, and information across imperial distances.
Genghis Khan: The founder of the Mongol Empire, who united Mongol tribes and led conquests across Asia. Ögedei inherited the empire and the succession established by his father.
Kurultai: A political assembly of Mongol leaders that could elect a khan and decide matters of state. The assembly at which Ögedei was proclaimed Great Khan formalized his succession.

Darughachi: A Mongol imperial governor or supervisor appointed to oversee conquered territories and local administration. These officials helped enforce central authority across lands governed under Ögedei.
Töregene Khatun: A Mongol empress who served as regent after Ögedei’s death and secured the election of her son Güyük. Her regency filled the years between Ögedei’s death and the next Great Khan’s accession.
Mongol succession: The practices and political struggles through which Mongol rulers selected successors and transferred authority. Ögedei’s accession followed Genghis Khan’s designation but required confirmation by Mongol leaders.
Mongol conquest of the Song dynasty: The prolonged Mongol campaign that brought the Southern Song dynasty under Mongol rule in 1279. Ögedei’s invasion of Song territory began a conflict that continued long after his reign.
Mongol census: A series of population and resource surveys used by Mongol rulers to assess and administer their territories. Ögedei’s censuses supported taxation, military recruitment, and the management of conquered populations.
