Oghuz Turks

The Oghuz Turks were a confederation of Turkic peoples whose migrations reshaped medieval Central Asia, Iran, Anatolia, and the Middle East.

Göktürk Khaganate: A Turkic empire that ruled much of Inner Asia in the sixth and seventh centuries. The Oghuz emerged among Turkic groups in the political world shaped by earlier Göktürk rule.
Seljuk: The eponymous ancestor associated with the founding lineage of the Seljuk dynasty. His descendants led an Oghuz group into the political and military struggles of Iran.
Battle of Manzikert: A battle in 1071 in which Seljuk forces defeated the Byzantine army in eastern Anatolia. The Seljuk victory accelerated Oghuz-Turkic settlement across Anatolia.
Karluks: A Turkic tribal confederation that played a major role in Central Asian history. Karluks were a neighboring Turkic grouping with a distinct political history from the Oghuz.
Western Turkic Khaganate: A Turkic empire that controlled much of Central Asia and the western steppe in the seventh century. Its collapse helped reshape the regional alliances from which Oghuz groupings developed.
Tuğrul Beg: The Seljuk ruler who entered Baghdad in 1055 and became protector of the Abbasid caliph. His conquests established Seljuk power as the leading Oghuz-derived state in the region.
Sultanate of Rum: A medieval Seljuk state in Anatolia, founded after Turkish expansion into Byzantine territory. It institutionalized Oghuz-derived rule in Anatolia after the Seljuk conquests.
Kipchaks: A Turkic confederation that dominated much of the western Eurasian steppe in the medieval period. Their steppe power and migrations overlapped with, but differed from, Oghuz movements.
Yabghu State of the Oghuz: A medieval Oghuz polity centered around the lower Syr Darya and the Aral Sea. It was a principal homeland and political center before major Oghuz migrations west.
Osman I: The founder of the Ottoman dynasty, which grew from a Turkic principality in northwestern Anatolia. The Ottoman tradition connected its people to the Oghuz, especially the Kayı tribe.
