One Thousand and One Nights

A collection of Middle Eastern and South Asian tales framed by Scheherazade’s nightly storytelling to King Shahryar. Its stories accumulated across languages and centuries rather than originating as a single author’s work.

Scheherazade: The storyteller who delays her execution by telling King Shahryar a new tale each night. Her unfinished nightly stories create the collection’s framing narrative.
Alf Layla wa-Layla: The Arabic title of the story collection commonly known in English as One Thousand and One Nights. The Arabic title names the textual tradition behind the English collection.
Edward William Lane: A nineteenth-century British orientalist whose English translation of the Nights included extensive cultural notes. His translation presented the tales alongside an influential account of Egyptian society.
The Canterbury Tales: Geoffrey Chaucer’s collection of stories told by pilgrims traveling to Canterbury. Both collections use a framing situation, but the Nights’ frame centers on survival and serial suspense.
King Shahryar: The ruler in the frame story who marries Scheherazade and orders his brides killed after one night. His violence gives Scheherazade’s storytelling its life-or-death stakes.
Persian literature: Literature composed in Persian, spanning poetry, prose, and many historical periods. A Persian collection called Hazar Afsan is often linked to the Nights’ early framing tradition.
Richard Francis Burton: A British explorer and translator whose multivolume English Nights appeared in the 1880s. His ornate translation became a major, controversial channel for the collection in English.
Decameron: Giovanni Boccaccio’s collection of one hundred tales told by young people sheltering from plague. Its bounded group of storytellers contrasts with the Nights’ expanding, historically layered tale cycles.
Frame story: A narrative structure in which an outer story contains one or more inner stories. The Nights links its many tales through Scheherazade’s recurring situation.
Hazar Afsan: A lost Persian story collection whose title means “A Thousand Tales.” Medieval accounts connect this work to an early form of the Nights’ frame story.
