Ono no Komachi

Ono no Komachi was a ninth-century Japanese waka poet celebrated among the Six Poetic Geniuses. Later literature transformed her into a legendary beauty whose old age brought decline and loss.

Waka: Waka is a Japanese poetic tradition, especially the five-line, 31-syllable form later called tanka. Komachi’s surviving poems belong to this tradition and use its compact forms.
Sōshi Arame: Sōshi Arame is a waka attributed to Ono no Komachi, known for comparing love’s longing to a dream. Its dream imagery exemplifies the emotional intensity associated with her poetry.
Ono clan: The Ono clan was a Japanese aristocratic family whose members served the state and court. Komachi’s name places her within this prominent family, though her biography remains uncertain.
Komachi legend: The Komachi legend is the body of stories depicting the poet as a great beauty who suffers in old age. It extends the sparse historical record into a dramatic account of decline and isolation.
Heian period: The Heian period was an era of Japanese history from 794 to 1185, centered on the imperial court in Kyoto. Komachi’s ninth-century career belongs to the period’s early court culture.
Hana no iro wa: Hana no iro wa is a waka attributed to Ono no Komachi about fading beauty and passing time. The poem’s image of fading flowers later resonated with legends of Komachi’s old age.
Ki no Tsurayuki: Ki no Tsurayuki was a Japanese poet and court official who wrote the preface to the Kokin Wakashū. His preface praises Komachi’s poetic power while offering little biographical detail.
Noh: Noh is a classical Japanese theatre form combining music, dance, masks, and poetic language. Several plays made Komachi one of Noh’s enduring figures.
Kokin Wakashū: The Kokin Wakashū is an imperial anthology of Japanese poetry compiled in the early tenth century. It preserves several poems attributed to Komachi and shaped her literary standing.
Sotoba Komachi: Sotoba Komachi is a Noh play in which the aged Komachi speaks with a priest beside a Buddhist monument. The play stages the old-age figure that became central to her legend.
