Optical window

An optical window is a transparent component that protects an optical system while allowing light to pass through. Its material and surfaces are chosen to limit distortion, reflection, and absorption.

Refractive index: A dimensionless measure of how much light slows in a material compared with vacuum. It governs refraction at the window surfaces and influences reflection losses.
Optical absorption: The transfer of optical energy into matter, often converting it to heat or electronic excitation. Absorption reduces transmission and can heat the window under intense illumination.
Vacuum window: A transparent pressure barrier that allows optical access to a vacuum chamber. It must transmit light while withstanding the pressure difference across the chamber wall.
Optical filter: A device that selectively transmits, reflects, or absorbs light according to wavelength or polarization. A filter intentionally selects light, while a clear window generally aims to preserve it.
Optical transmittance: The fraction of incident optical power that passes through a material or optical component. It quantifies the light an optical window delivers to the protected system.
Birefringence: The dependence of a material’s refractive index on light polarization and propagation direction. Stress or crystal structure can split polarization states and distort transmitted light.
Pressure window: A transparent barrier designed to withstand a pressure difference while transmitting light. Its thickness, shape, and mounting must resist the system’s pressure load.
Dome port: A curved transparent pressure boundary used for optical access, especially in underwater systems. A dome port is curved to manage viewing and pressure effects that a flat window does not.
Fresnel equations: Equations describing reflection and transmission of light at an interface between media. They predict reflection from the window’s front and back surfaces.
Optical flat: A precision surface or plate used as a reference for testing optical surface flatness. Surface flatness measurements help determine whether a window will distort a wavefront.
