Oratory

Oratory is the art of public speaking, especially persuasive speech delivered to an audience. It combines language, vocal delivery, and awareness of listeners to move or inform them.

Ethos: An appeal to a speaker’s credibility, character, or authority. Orators establish trust so audiences will take their claims seriously.
Exordium: The opening section of a classical speech, intended to gain the audience’s attention and goodwill. An effective opening prepares listeners to consider the orator’s case.
Corax of Syracuse: A Greek rhetorician traditionally associated with early systematization of rhetoric in fifth-century BCE Sicily. Ancient accounts connect him with teaching persuasive speech in civic disputes.
Pericles' Funeral Oration: A funeral speech attributed to Pericles in Thucydides’ account of the Peloponnesian War. It presents civic identity and democratic ideals through a public address.
Conversation: An informal exchange in which participants share turns speaking and listening. Unlike a prepared oration, conversation is usually reciprocal and shaped turn by turn.
Pathos: An appeal to an audience’s emotions, values, or sympathies. Emotional appeals can make an orator’s arguments more compelling.
Narratio: The section of a classical speech that presents the relevant facts or story. It gives an audience the background needed to follow the argument.
Gorgias: A fifth-century BCE Greek sophist known for rhetorical skill and persuasive displays. His performances helped make eloquence a visible and debated public art.
Demosthenes' Philippics: A series of speeches by Demosthenes urging Athenians to resist Philip II of Macedon. They exemplify oratory used to press a political audience toward action.
Debate: A structured exchange in which opposing sides argue for competing positions. Debate formalizes opposition, while an oration may present one speaker’s case alone.
