Knowra Oromo language Oromo language Oromo is a Cushitic language spoken primarily by the Oromo people of Ethiopia and neighboring parts of the Horn of Africa. It is one of Ethiopia’s largest languages and is written mainly in the Latin-based Qubee script.
Cushitic languages : A branch of the Afroasiatic language family spoken mainly in the Horn of Africa and parts of northeastern Africa. Oromo belongs to this branch, alongside languages such as Somali and Afar.
Proto-Cushitic language : The reconstructed ancestral language from which the Cushitic languages developed. Oromo’s deeper linguistic ancestry is traced through the Cushitic family.
Oromo media : Broadcast, print, and digital media produced in the Oromo language. Radio, television, and online publishing carry Oromo to audiences across regions.
Tsegaye Gabre-Medhin : An Ethiopian poet, playwright, and translator who wrote in Amharic and English and translated works into Ethiopian languages. His translation and literary work belongs to the wider multilingual setting in which Oromo writing developed.
Amharic : A Semitic language of Ethiopia and the country’s federal working language. Amharic shares Ethiopia’s public sphere with Oromo but belongs to a different language branch.
Afroasiatic languages : A language family spanning much of North Africa, the Horn of Africa, and parts of western Asia. The Cushitic branch that includes Oromo sits within this larger family.
East Cushitic languages : A subgroup of Cushitic languages spoken across the Horn of Africa and nearby regions. Oromo is commonly classified within the East Cushitic branch.
Oromo education : Teaching and learning conducted in Oromo or focused on Oromo as a subject. Oromo serves as a medium of instruction and literacy in parts of Ethiopia.
Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement : An Oromo political organization founded in 1996 that advocated self-determination and democratic rights. Its political activities formed part of the struggle over Oromo public and institutional life.
Somali language : An East Cushitic language spoken chiefly in Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Kenya. Somali is a close regional relative that shares Cushitic ancestry with Oromo.
