Oromo people

The Oromo are a Cushitic-speaking people indigenous to Ethiopia and neighboring parts of the Horn of Africa. They have diverse regional traditions and a shared Oromo language and cultural heritage.

Oromo language: A Cushitic language spoken chiefly in Ethiopia and parts of Kenya. It is a major shared medium across Oromo communities and has several regional varieties.
Oromo migrations: Historical movements of Oromo populations across the Horn of Africa, especially from the sixteenth century onward. These movements reshaped settlement patterns and political relations in the region.
Tadesse Biru: An Ethiopian military officer who became a prominent Oromo nationalist in the 1960s. His political organizing helped make Oromo self-determination a public cause.
Oromo Liberation Front: An Oromo political organization founded in 1973 that has sought self-determination for Oromo people. Its armed and political campaigns became central to modern Oromo nationalist history.
Oromo clans: Kinship groups that organize descent and social relations in Oromo society. Clan affiliations add a layer of identity alongside language and regional belonging.
Bale Mountains: A mountain range in southeastern Ethiopia, home to distinctive Oromo communities and ecological zones. The region features prominently in accounts of Oromo origins and historical settlement.
Baaroo Tumsaa: An Oromo lawyer and political organizer associated with the founding of the Oromo Liberation Front. His work connected Oromo political activism with organized nationalist movements.
Oromo protests: A series of demonstrations in Ethiopia, especially from 2014 to 2018, against political marginalization and land policies. The protests transformed national politics and helped bring about major political changes.
Gadaa: An Oromo system of age-based political, social, and ritual organization. It is a prominent institution through which Oromo communities have organized leadership and public life.
Borana people: An Oromo group whose communities live mainly in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya. The Borana preserve influential pastoral traditions and forms of Gadaa organization.
