Ossetians

The Ossetians are an Iranian-speaking people of the Caucasus whose language descends from Alan, the language of a medieval steppe people.

Ossetian language: An Eastern Iranian language spoken chiefly in North and South Ossetia, with Iron and Digor as its main dialects. Its descent from Alan provides the clearest linguistic link between Ossetians and their historical ancestors.
Scythians: A collection of Iranian-speaking nomadic peoples who dominated parts of the Eurasian steppe in antiquity. They provide an earlier context for the Iranian-speaking groups from which the Alans emerged.
Ossetian–Georgian conflict: A prolonged political and military conflict between Georgian authorities and South Ossetian separatist forces. It has deeply affected relations between Ossetians and Georgians and the status of South Ossetia.
Uatsdin: A contemporary Ossetian religious movement drawing on pre-Christian beliefs and practices associated with Ossetian tradition. It shows how some Ossetians reinterpret inherited religious customs as a distinct faith.
Alan people: An Iranian-speaking people of the Eurasian steppe, prominent in late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Ossetians are widely regarded as the principal modern descendants of the Alans.
Sarmatians: Iranian-speaking nomadic peoples who occupied parts of the Eurasian steppe from the first millennium BCE into late antiquity. The Alans developed within the wider Sarmatian world of which Ossetian ancestry forms a later part.
Russo-Georgian War: The August 2008 war between Russia and Georgia, fought largely over South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The war reshaped South Ossetia's political status and strengthened its dependence on Russia.
Ossetian Orthodox Church: The Orthodox Christian institution serving Ossetians, historically connected to the Georgian Orthodox Church and Russian Orthodoxy. Orthodox Christianity is a major religious tradition among Ossetians.
North Ossetia–Alania: A republic of the Russian Federation in the North Caucasus, home to many Ossetians. It is the main political and demographic center of Ossetians in Russia.
Alania: A medieval polity associated with the Alans in the North Caucasus and surrounding steppe regions. Its history connects Alan political power with the Caucasian homeland of later Ossetians.
