Ottoman Syria

Ottoman Syria comprised the Levantine provinces and districts governed by the Ottoman Empire from its conquest of the region in 1516–1517 until the empire’s collapse after World War I.

Eyalet of Damascus: An Ottoman province centered on Damascus that governed much of southern Syria for much of the empire’s rule. Its governors administered a large share of the region and organized the annual pilgrimage caravan.
Battle of Marj Dabiq: A 1516 battle in northern Syria in which the Ottomans defeated the Mamluk Sultanate. The Ottoman victory opened the way to their conquest of Syria.
Fakhr al-Din II: A Druze emir of Mount Lebanon who ruled from the late 16th century into the early 17th and expanded his influence across parts of Syria. His growing autonomy tested Ottoman control in the Levant.
Arab Revolt: An uprising against Ottoman rule during World War I, launched in 1916 by Sharif Hussein of Mecca with British support. It helped undermine Ottoman authority in the Arab provinces and brought Arab forces into Damascus.
Hajj caravan: A large organized group of pilgrims traveling to Mecca, often under state protection and logistical support. The Damascus caravan linked provincial administration to the empire’s annual pilgrimage.
Eyalet of Aleppo: An Ottoman province centered on Aleppo, an important commercial and administrative hub in northern Syria. Its northern districts connected Ottoman Syria to Anatolia and the wider trade routes.
Battle of Ridaniya: A 1517 battle near Cairo in which the Ottomans defeated the Mamluks and completed their conquest of Egypt. It consolidated the imperial victory that had begun with the conquest of Syria.
Zahir al-Umar: An 18th-century Arab ruler who built a largely autonomous domain in Galilee under nominal Ottoman authority. His rule shows how local strongmen could reshape provincial politics.
Sykes–Picot Agreement: A secret 1916 agreement in which Britain and France planned spheres of influence in Ottoman Arab territories. Its provisions foreshadowed the division of former Ottoman lands after the war.
Damascus affair: A 1840 blood-libel accusation against Damascus’s Jewish community that triggered arrests and international protest. The episode exposed communal vulnerability and the reach of European diplomatic intervention.
