Ovadia Yosef

Ovadia Yosef (1920–2013) was an Israeli Sephardi rabbi and halakhic authority who served as Sephardi Chief Rabbi and became the spiritual leader of the Shas party.

Shas: An Israeli ultra-Orthodox political party founded in 1984, drawing much of its support from Mizrahi and Sephardi Jews. Yosef served as its spiritual leader and helped make it a major force in Israeli politics.
Responsa: Written answers by a Jewish legal authority to questions about Jewish law and practice. Yosef's rulings circulated chiefly through this established rabbinic literary form.
