Oyashio Current

The Oyashio is a cold, nutrient-rich current that flows southward from the subarctic North Pacific along the Kuril Islands and northeastern Japan. It meets the warm Kuroshio Current near Japan.

North Pacific Current: An eastward current in the North Pacific that forms part of the North Pacific subtropical circulation. Its northern branch helps connect the Oyashio’s region to the wider North Pacific circulation.
Oyashio region: The northwestern North Pacific waters influenced by the southward-flowing Oyashio Current. This is the area where the current’s cold, nutrient-rich water supports high biological productivity.
Kuril Islands: A volcanic island chain extending between the Kamchatka Peninsula and Hokkaido, Japan. The Oyashio flows southward along this chain before reaching waters east of Japan.
Nutrient upwelling: The upward transport of nutrient-rich deep water into the sunlit ocean layer. Mixing and upwelling near the Oyashio front replenish nutrients available to phytoplankton.
Kuroshio Current: A warm, fast western boundary current that flows northward along Japan’s Pacific coast. The Oyashio meets this current near Japan, creating a sharp oceanographic boundary.
Japanese sardine: A schooling fish species found in the northwest Pacific and harvested in East Asian fisheries. Its abundance and distribution respond to changing conditions in the Oyashio–Kuroshio region.
Bering Sea: A high-latitude marginal sea of the North Pacific between Alaska and the Russian Far East. Water from the subarctic North Pacific, including the Bering Sea region, contributes to Oyashio source waters.
Biological pump: The movement of carbon from the surface ocean to the deep sea through biological processes. High productivity in Oyashio-influenced waters can increase the export of organic carbon downward.
Oyashio–Kuroshio Extension: A variable region of interacting currents and fronts extending eastward from the waters off Japan. It carries the Oyashio–Kuroshio interaction into the open North Pacific.
Pacific saury: A migratory pelagic fish of the North Pacific that supports major fisheries in East Asia. Its feeding and migration routes are associated with productive waters near the Oyashio front.
