Oyo Empire

The Oyo Empire was a Yoruba state centered in what is now southwestern Nigeria, whose military power and trade networks made it a dominant West African empire from the 17th to the 19th century.

Alaafin of Oyo: The Alaafin was the hereditary ruler and foremost political authority of the Oyo Empire. The Alaafin led the state but faced constraints from councils and military institutions.
Yoruba people: The Yoruba are a West African ethnolinguistic group concentrated in southwestern Nigeria and neighboring regions. Oyo’s rulers and most of its population belonged to Yoruba-speaking communities.
Atlantic slave trade: The Atlantic slave trade forcibly transported millions of Africans across the Atlantic to the Americas from the 16th to the 19th century. Oyo’s wars and commerce became entangled with the expanding demand for enslaved people.
Ilorin: Ilorin is a city in present-day Nigeria that became an emirate and major political center in the 19th century. Ilorin’s break from Oyo accelerated the empire’s fragmentation.
Oyo Mesi: The Oyo Mesi was a council of seven hereditary chiefs that advised the Alaafin and held powers of political restraint. Its authority could limit the Alaafin and, in some circumstances, compel his death.
Ile-Ife: Ile-Ife is a Yoruba city renowned as a major center of early Yoruba political and artistic life. Yoruba traditions connected Oyo’s royal dynasty to Ile-Ife’s sacred prestige.
Slave Coast: The Slave Coast was a historical coastal region of West Africa associated with the export of enslaved Africans. Oyo’s southern trade routes connected inland markets to ports along this coast.
Fulani jihad: The Fulani jihad was a series of Islamic reform and state-building movements in West Africa, especially in the early 19th century. The Sokoto-linked movement reached Ilorin and intensified pressure on a weakened Oyo.
Ogboni: Ogboni is a Yoruba institution of titled elders with religious, judicial, and political functions. Ogboni participation helped check royal authority within Oyo’s governing order.
Oranyan: Oranyan is a legendary Yoruba prince associated with the founding of Oyo and the Benin dynasty. Oyo origin traditions identify Oranyan as the founder of its royal line.
