Pan-Americanism

Pan-Americanism is a movement advocating cooperation, solidarity, or political unity among the countries of the Americas. Its projects have ranged from diplomatic coordination to proposals for continental confederation.

Simón Bolívar: A Venezuelan military and political leader who helped liberate several South American countries from Spanish rule. His 1826 Congress of Panama proposed a league of newly independent American republics.
Organization of American States: A regional organization founded in 1948 to promote cooperation, democracy, security, and human rights in the Americas. It is the principal permanent political forum built around inter-American cooperation.
Monroe Doctrine: An 1823 U.S. policy opposing new European colonization and intervention in the Americas. Its unilateral U.S. posture contrasts with Pan-Americanism's stated ideal of shared continental action.
Inter-American Conference for the Maintenance of Continental Peace and Security: A 1947 Rio de Janeiro conference that produced the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance. It marked the conversion of wartime hemispheric cooperation into a postwar security framework.
Congress of Panama: A 1826 diplomatic meeting convened by Simón Bolívar to coordinate cooperation among the new American republics. It was an early attempt to turn continental solidarity into a formal alliance.
Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance: A 1947 treaty committing its signatories to consult and respond collectively to armed attacks in the Americas. It translated hemispheric solidarity into a collective-security commitment.
Roosevelt Corollary: A 1904 addition to the Monroe Doctrine asserting a U.S. right to intervene in cases of chronic wrongdoing in the Americas. It exposed how hemispheric order could mean U.S. intervention rather than equal partnership.
Charter of the Organization of American States: The 1948 founding treaty that established the Organization of American States and set out its purposes and principles. It codified commitments to solidarity, peaceful settlement, and nonintervention.
James Monroe: The fifth president of the United States, whose 1823 address declared opposition to further European colonization in the Americas. The Monroe Doctrine later became a major, contested framework for U.S. claims to hemispheric leadership.
Inter-American Commission on Human Rights: An Organization of American States body that monitors and promotes human rights across the region. It shows how cooperation expanded beyond diplomacy and defense into regional rights oversight.
