Panchen Lama

The Panchen Lama is a major Tibetan Buddhist tulku lineage traditionally regarded as second in religious stature to the Dalai Lama. Its holders have been closely associated with Tashilhunpo Monastery and the recognition of reincarnated lamas.

Lobsang Chökyi Gyaltsen: A seventeenth-century Gelug teacher whom the Fifth Dalai Lama posthumously recognized as the first Panchen Lama. His recognition established the lineage retrospectively and gave it its enduring name.
Reincarnation in Tibetan Buddhism: The belief that accomplished teachers can be reborn and recognized in later lives. It provides the religious basis for continuity between Panchen Lama incarnations.
