Pancreatic beta cell

A hormone-secreting cell in the pancreatic islets that produces insulin and releases it in response to elevated blood glucose.

Glucose-stimulated insulin secretion: The process by which rising glucose triggers pancreatic beta cells to release insulin. It describes the central sequence linking glucose detection to insulin release.
Insulin: A peptide hormone that lowers blood glucose by promoting glucose uptake and storage. It is the principal hormone produced and secreted by beta cells.
Diabetes mellitus: A group of disorders characterized by chronic high blood glucose caused by impaired insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Loss or dysfunction of beta-cell insulin secretion contributes to several forms of diabetes.
Pancreatic development: The embryonic processes that form the pancreas and its endocrine and exocrine cell types. Beta cells emerge as part of the developing pancreas’s endocrine compartment.
Beta-cell dedifferentiation: The loss of mature beta-cell identity and function, sometimes with reversion toward a less differentiated state. It may contribute to declining insulin secretion in diabetes beyond outright cell death.
ATP-sensitive potassium channel: A membrane ion channel whose opening is inhibited by intracellular ATP. Its closure links glucose metabolism to the electrical signal that triggers secretion.
Proinsulin: The precursor molecule that is processed into insulin and C-peptide. Beta cells synthesize this precursor before packaging mature insulin for secretion.
Type 1 diabetes: An autoimmune disease in which destruction of pancreatic beta cells causes severe insulin deficiency. It is the clearest example of diabetes caused by beta-cell loss.
Endocrine progenitor cell: A developing pancreatic cell capable of generating hormone-producing endocrine cells. This progenitor stage precedes differentiation into beta cells and other islet cell types.
Beta-cell regeneration: The formation of new functional beta cells through cell replication or conversion from other cell types. Regeneration could restore insulin-producing capacity when beta-cell mass is reduced.
