Papal monarchy

Papal monarchy was a medieval form of church government that concentrated authority in the pope and asserted his supremacy over the Christian church.

Papal primacy: The doctrine that the bishop of Rome holds a unique primacy among Christian bishops. Papal monarchy grounded centralized rule in the pope’s claimed primacy.
Pope Gregory VII: The pope from 1073 to 1085 who pursued church reform and asserted strong papal authority. His program became a defining early expression of papal monarchy.
Caesaropapism: A system in which a secular ruler exercises substantial control over religious institutions and doctrine. It reverses the direction of supremacy by placing the church under political rule.
First Council of Lyon: The ecumenical council held in 1245 that deposed Emperor Frederick II under Pope Innocent IV. Its deposition of an emperor illustrates the political reach claimed by medieval popes.

Avignon Papacy: The period from 1309 to 1377 when the papal court resided mainly in Avignon rather than Rome. Its dependence on French political conditions exposed tensions within centralized papal government.
