Participatory art

Participatory art is art practices in which participants contribute directly to making or shaping the work. Their actions, decisions, or interactions form part of the artwork.

Audience participation: Audience participation is the involvement of spectators in an event, performance, or artwork. It describes the broadest route by which spectators become contributors to an artwork.
The Dinner Party: The Dinner Party is Judy Chicago's installation honoring women in history through a ceremonial table and related displays. Its collaborative production and educational projects connect feminist art with collective making.
Dada: Dada was an avant-garde movement that rejected artistic conventions through absurdity, chance, and provocation. Dada's experiments with chance and disruption helped unsettle the boundary between artist and audience.
Spectatorship: Spectatorship is the position and activity of observing an artwork or performance. Participatory art challenges the assumption that an audience's role is only to watch.
Relational aesthetics: Relational aesthetics is an art theory that treats social relations and encounters as artistic material. It frames social interaction itself as material for participatory works.
The Battle of Orgreave: The Battle of Orgreave is Jeremy Deller's 2001 reenactment of a 1984 confrontation between miners and police. Local participants and former combatants helped stage a contested public memory.
Fluxus: Fluxus was an international art movement that combined performance, everyday actions, and experimental scores. Its event scores invited performers and audiences to carry out open-ended instructions.
Interactive fiction: Interactive fiction is a narrative work in which user choices affect its progression or outcome. It offers a comparison where participant choices operate within a designed system.
Social practice art: Social practice art is art organized around social engagement, collaboration, or collective activity. It is a broader practice that often uses participation to make social relations visible.
The People’s Choice: The People’s Choice is a 1991 public artwork by Helen and Newton Harrison based on community preferences for a city park. Residents' choices directly informed the proposed design of an urban green space.
