Partition of Vietnam

The division of Vietnam into northern and southern zones after the 1954 Geneva agreements, pending nationwide elections that never occurred.

Geneva Accords: The 1954 agreements that ended the First Indochina War and set terms for a temporary division of Vietnam. Their military provisions established the zones and the line separating them.
First Indochina War: The 1946–1954 war between France and the Viet Minh over French colonial rule in Indochina. Its conclusion produced the negotiations that divided Vietnam.
North Vietnam: The communist-led Democratic Republic of Vietnam, governing the northern zone after the 1954 partition. It became one of the two rival governments created by the division.
Partition of Korea: The division of Korea into northern and southern states after World War II. Like Vietnam, Korea was divided after war, but its separation persisted as two states.
17th parallel north: A latitude line near which Vietnam's military demarcation boundary was drawn in 1954. It became the best-known geographic marker of the division.

Partition of India: The 1947 division of British India into the independent dominions of India and Pakistan. It was a different postcolonial partition, producing mass migration and enduring disputes.
Demilitarized Zone (Vietnam): A buffer zone established around the military demarcation line separating North and South Vietnam. It separated opposing forces around the partition boundary.
Viet Minh: A Vietnamese nationalist and communist-led independence movement founded under Ho Chi Minh in 1941. Its forces controlled the northern zone after the ceasefire.
