Peloponnesian League

The Peloponnesian League was a military and political alliance of Greek city-states led by Sparta, dominant in the Peloponnese from the sixth to fourth centuries BCE.

Spartan hegemony: Sparta’s leadership and influence over other Greek states, maintained through military power and diplomacy. The league converted Spartan military prestige into regional leadership.

Athenian Empire: The network of subject states controlled by Athens during much of the fifth century BCE. Athens increasingly imposed control where Sparta generally relied on allied autonomy.
Battle of Mantinea (418 BCE): A battle in 418 BCE in which Sparta defeated a coalition led by Argos in the Peloponnese. The victory reasserted Spartan influence among wavering Peloponnesian states.
Congress of Corinth: A gathering of representatives from Greek states allied with Sparta during the fourth century BCE. Allied representatives met to coordinate policy under Spartan leadership.
Argos: An ancient Greek city-state in the northeastern Peloponnese and a rival of Sparta. Argos remained outside Spartan leadership and contested regional power.
