Penetrating trauma

Penetrating trauma occurs when an object breaks the skin or enters a body cavity, potentially damaging underlying tissues, blood vessels, and organs.

Wound ballistics: The study of how projectiles transfer energy and produce tissue damage. Explains how projectile speed, shape, and deformation affect the injury beyond the entry wound.
Advanced trauma life support: A structured approach to the early assessment and stabilization of injured patients. Its primary survey prioritizes airway, breathing, circulation, and other immediate threats.
Blunt trauma: Injury caused by impact or force without an object breaking the skin. It can cause severe internal damage without the open wound characteristic of penetration.
Sepsis: Life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated response to infection. Contaminated penetrating wounds can introduce pathogens into tissues or body cavities.
Cavitation: The formation of a temporary cavity as rapidly displaced material moves away from a projectile's path. Temporary tissue stretch can extend damage beyond the projectile's permanent path.
Damage control surgery: An abbreviated operation that controls bleeding and contamination before later definitive repair. It can stabilize patients with severe penetrating injuries before prolonged reconstruction.
Gunshot wound: A wound produced when a firearm projectile enters or passes through the body. It is a projectile-specific form of penetrating injury with distinctive ballistic effects.
Compartment syndrome: Dangerous pressure buildup within a closed muscle compartment that impairs blood flow. Vascular injury and swelling after limb penetration can threaten muscle and nerve tissue.
Hemorrhage: The escape of blood from damaged blood vessels or the heart. Vessel injury can cause rapid blood loss even when the external wound looks small.
Exploratory laparotomy: Surgical opening of the abdomen to identify and treat internal injury. It is used when penetrating abdominal injury requires operative assessment or control.
