Perfume

Perfume is a scented liquid made from aromatic compounds, usually diluted in alcohol or another carrier and applied to the body or clothing.

Perfume concentration: The proportion of aromatic materials in a finished fragrance product. Concentration shapes intensity, longevity, and customary product labels such as eau de parfum.
Essential oil: A concentrated volatile oil extracted from plant material by distillation or other processes. Essential oils supply natural aromatic materials used in some perfumes.
Incense: A material burned to release fragrant smoke, often for ritual or aromatic purposes. Burning aromatics preceded and accompanied the use of liquid perfumes.
Personal fragrance: A scented product worn on the body for personal expression or enjoyment. Perfume is one of the principal forms of personal fragrance.
Cologne: A light fragrance product, traditionally associated with a lower concentration of aromatic materials. Cologne is commonly distinguished from perfume by its lighter formulation and usage.
Fragrance pyramid: A model that groups fragrance notes into top, middle, and base stages as they emerge over time. It describes the changing sequence of scents as volatile ingredients evaporate.
Aroma compound: A chemical substance capable of producing an odor detectable by the olfactory system. Perfume ingredients are selected and combined for their odors and material properties.
Ancient Egyptian cosmetics: Beauty and body-care materials used in ancient Egypt, including scented oils and ointments. Scented preparations were part of ancient Egyptian grooming and ritual life.
Scent marketing: The use of ambient or product-associated scents to shape consumer experience and behavior. Perfumery techniques also create scents for shops, products, and branded environments.
Eau de toilette: A fragrance product generally formulated with less aromatic concentrate than eau de parfum. It offers a lighter alternative to more concentrated perfume products.
