Peter Simon Pallas

Peter Simon Pallas (1741–1811) was a German naturalist and explorer whose expeditions and publications documented the natural history and peoples of the Russian Empire.

Pallas’s Second Expedition: A Russian Academy of Sciences expedition led by Pallas across parts of the Russian Empire from 1793 to 1794. This journey extended his earlier fieldwork through southern Russia and the Caucasus.
Field natural history: The study of organisms through direct observation in their natural environments. Pallas’s expeditions made field observation central to his natural-history work.
University of Göttingen: A German university founded in 1737 that became a major center of scholarship and research. Pallas studied at Göttingen before building his reputation as a naturalist.
