Philip Sheridan

Philip Sheridan was a Union Army general in the American Civil War who later commanded the U.S. Army and led campaigns against Native American nations.

Battle of Perryville: An 1862 battle in Kentucky that ended a Confederate invasion of the state. Sheridan’s conduct there helped attract notice from Union commanders.
Ulysses S. Grant: Union general who became commanding general of the U.S. Army and the eighteenth U.S. president. Grant promoted Sheridan and relied on him in major campaigns.
Union cavalry in the American Civil War: The mounted arm of the Union Army, used for reconnaissance, raids, screening, and combat. Sheridan’s cavalry command became a model for large, coordinated mounted operations.
Commanding General of the United States Army: The senior uniformed military office that led the United States Army before the chief of staff system. Sheridan held the office from 1883 until his death in 1888.
