Photographic paper

Photographic paper is paper coated with a light-sensitive emulsion, usually containing silver halides, that records an image when exposed and processed.

Silver halide: A light-sensitive compound of silver and a halogen, such as silver bromide or silver chloride. Silver halide crystals in the paper emulsion capture light and form the latent image.
Gelatin silver print: A photographic print made with silver halides suspended in gelatin on a paper support. This is the standard black-and-white print process using silver-based paper.
Enlarger: An optical device that projects a photographic negative onto photosensitive paper at an enlarged scale. An enlarger controls the image projected onto paper in darkroom printing.
Inkjet printing: A printing method that forms images by depositing droplets of ink onto a substrate. Unlike photographic paper exposure, inkjet printing places pigment or dye directly on a surface.
Latent image: An invisible chemical image formed in a photosensitive material by exposure to light. The paper holds this image before development makes it visible.
Resin-coated paper: Photographic paper whose base is sealed between layers of polyethylene resin. Its waterproof coating shortens washing and drying compared with fiber paper.
Photogram: A photographic image made by placing objects directly on photosensitive material and exposing it to light. Paper can record object silhouettes without a camera or negative.
Dye-sublimation printing: A printing process that transfers dye to a substrate using heat and controlled vaporization. It produces photographic-looking output without developing a light-exposed emulsion.
Photographic developer: A chemical solution that converts exposed silver halide into visible metallic silver. It amplifies the paper’s latent image into dark silver deposits.
Fiber-based paper: Photographic paper with a paper-fiber base beneath its emulsion and baryta or related coating. Its absorbent base gives prints different processing and archival characteristics.
