Phytogeography

Phytogeography studies the geographic distribution of plant species and communities, including the environmental and historical processes that shape where they occur.

Climate: The long-term statistical pattern of atmospheric conditions in a region. Temperature and precipitation set major limits on plant growth and survival.
Plant species: A group of plants classified as one species under a chosen biological or taxonomic framework. Species are the basic units whose geographic ranges phytogeography investigates.
Conservation biogeography: The application of biogeographic knowledge to biodiversity conservation and management. It uses plant-range patterns to identify conservation priorities and gaps.
Alexander von Humboldt: A Prussian naturalist and geographer whose fieldwork helped establish modern physical geography and plant geography. His elevation-based vegetation observations linked plant patterns to environmental gradients.
Species distribution modelling: The use of statistical or computational methods to relate species occurrences to environmental conditions. Models estimate suitable plant ranges, but depend on data and assumptions.
Soil: The upper layer of Earth’s surface, composed of mineral particles, organic matter, water, and air. Soil chemistry and structure help determine which plants can establish in a place.
Plant community: A group of plant populations living together in a particular place. Community distributions reveal patterns that are not visible from single-species ranges.
Biodiversity hotspot: A region with exceptional endemic species richness that has lost much of its natural habitat. Plant distributions help reveal areas with concentrated endemism and habitat loss.
Augustin Pyramus de Candolle: A Swiss botanist who developed influential ideas about plant geography and botanical classification. His work helped define plant geography as a distinct field of study.
Ecological niche modelling: Computational estimation of a species’ environmental niche from occurrence and environmental data. Niche projections help test how plant ranges might shift under future conditions.
