Pick and roll

A basketball play in which a teammate sets a screen for the ball handler, then moves toward the basket to receive a pass or create a scoring chance.

Screen (basketball): An offensive player legally positions themselves to impede a defender and free a teammate. The screener’s contact with the ball handler’s defender creates the opening that starts the play.
Pick and pop: A screen action in which the screener moves away from the basket for a jump shot instead of rolling toward it. It presents the same initial screen with a different destination for the screener.
Basketball: A team sport in which players score by putting a ball through an elevated hoop. The play depends on basketball’s rules, court, and coordinated offense and defense.
John Stockton: An American basketball point guard who played for the Utah Jazz from 1984 to 2003. His partnership with Karl Malone became one of the NBA’s best-known pick-and-roll combinations.
Give-and-go: An offensive action in which a player passes to a teammate and cuts to receive a return pass. It creates an opening through a pass and cut rather than a screen and roll.
Roll (basketball): The screener moves toward the basket after setting a screen, seeking a pass or drawing defensive attention. This movement gives the play its second action and threatens the defense near the rim.
Spain pick and roll: A pick and roll variation in which a third offensive player screens the screener’s defender. The extra screen complicates coverage of both the ball handler and the roller.
Dribble: The act of repeatedly bouncing a basketball while moving or maintaining possession. The ball handler uses the dribble to turn the screen into a drive, shot, or pass.
Karl Malone: An American power forward who played most of his NBA career with the Utah Jazz. He often served as the rolling finisher in his celebrated partnership with John Stockton.
Handoff (basketball): An exchange in which one offensive player hands the ball directly to a moving teammate. A handoff can resemble a ball screen but transfers possession through a close exchange.
