Pierre-Joseph Proudhon

Pierre-Joseph Proudhon (1809–1865) was a French socialist thinker and politician whose critique of property helped shape anarchism. He advocated mutualism, a society organized through voluntary association and reciprocal exchange.

Property: A system of rights and duties governing control, use, and transfer of resources. Proudhon challenged the legitimacy of property rights that let owners draw income from others’ labor.
Mutual credit: A system in which members extend credit to one another through a shared institution, often at low interest. Proudhon saw mutual credit as a way to make productive resources accessible without capitalist lenders.
French Revolution of 1848: A revolution that overthrew France’s July Monarchy and established the Second Republic. Proudhon entered national politics during the revolution and was elected to the Constituent Assembly.
Karl Marx: A German philosopher and political economist who developed a critique of capitalism and a theory of class struggle. Marx attacked Proudhon’s economic theories and their disagreement shaped later socialist divisions.
Individualist anarchism: Anarchist approaches emphasizing individual autonomy and voluntary association against imposed authority. Proudhon’s defense of decentralized exchange influenced later anarchists focused on individual independence.
Possession: Actual control or use of a thing, distinct from legal title to it. Proudhon distinguished possession grounded in use from property grounded in exclusive legal ownership.
People's Bank: A proposed cooperative bank that would provide interest-free credit and facilitate exchange among workers. Proudhon’s 1849 project aimed to put mutual credit into practice, but closed shortly after opening.
What Is Property?: Proudhon’s 1840 book arguing that property, understood as exploitative ownership, is theft. This work made his attack on property famous and established his place in socialist debate.
Mikhail Bakunin: A Russian revolutionary and anarchist who opposed the state and advocated collective social revolution. Bakunin inherited anarchist themes associated with Proudhon while developing a more revolutionary collectivism.
Anarcho-syndicalism: A revolutionary labor movement seeking worker self-management through trade unions and direct action. Its emphasis on worker associations echoes Proudhon’s proposal that producers organize economic life themselves.
